Montclair, NJ (3/5/11) – Sophomore attack Christian Beitel (Newtown, CT / Newtown) scored five times and picked up two assists while freshman Brian Cannon (Reistertown, MD / Loyola Bakersfield) added three goals and five assists as No. 16 Dickinson College remained unbeaten with a 15-10 victory over Montclair State in men’s lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore attack Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, MD/Gonzaga) collected three goals and Matt Cherry (Radnor, PA / Radnor) two goals and two assists as the Red Devils used four-goal stretch in the second and third period to pick up the victory improving to 3-0.

Junior attack Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) scored three goals for Montclair State which suffered its first regular-season home loss in nearly two years. The Red Hawks, who fell to 1-1, lost on Sprague Field during the regular season for the first time since a 8-7 double-overtime loss to Drew on April 1, 2009.

The Red Devils scored the first two goals of the game and played nearly six of the 15 minutes in the opening period on the man-advantage as MSU was twice flagged for an illegal stick which brought on two separate three-minute penalties. Cherry and Cannon scored 37 seconds apart, the second a man-up tally for the 2-0 lead before Montclair got on the board as Thomas Ring (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) scored with 6:11 left. Following the goal, Montclair picked up the second infraction and that led to a second goal man-up by Cannon as the Red Devils led 3-1.

Beitel would score the first of his five 2:05 into the second quarter for a 4- lead but Montclair would come back with two scores as Meth notched his first goal and Ring added his second on the man-advantage a 49 seconds later as the Red Hawks closed the gap to 4-3. Beitel got his second with 6:47 left for a two-goal advantage however Bobby Sinicola(North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) answered five seconds later as Dickinson led 5-4.

Montclair would get a great chance to tie the game with just over five minutes remaining as the Red Hawks’ Jack Skeels(Roseland, NJ / West Essex) intercepted a clear and went 1-on-1 against goalkeeper Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, NY / Cold Spring Harbor), who made a spectacular save to keep the Red Devils in front.

That play would spark Dickinson, which scored the next four goals, three coming in the closing five minutes. Beitel tallied twice and Cherry added two – one in each quarter as the Red Devils built a 9-4 lead with 13:15 to go in the third. Montclair would get back to 11-7 early in the fourth as Trevor Teel (Oakland, NJ / Don Bosco Prep) scored the first of his two goals 56 seconds into the period.

But that would be as close as Montclair would get as Dickinson would score three times in a 1:55 span as Beitel, Leon and Bobby Kingsley (Bethesda, MD / St. Albans) each had a goal to push the lead to 14-7 with 11:10 to play.

Hanley made 14 saves for Dickinson, which got a solid performance from faceoff men Chip Murray (New Canaan, CT / New Canaan) and Parker Waldron (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon). Murray was 9-of-13 with six ground balls while Waldron went 6-of-11 and a team-best seven ground balls. Sophomore defenseman Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, NJ / Basking Ridge) had a goal, assists, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Teel and Sinicola each finished with two goals for Montclair. Junior goalkeeper Mark Glander (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) stopped 15 shots with freshman Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ / North Warren) had one in his first career action.  Senior defender Anthony Dzienkiewicz (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) posted four caused turnovers and three ground balls for the Red Hawks.
