Port Charlotte, FL (3/15/11) – The Montclair State baseball team fell to 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in the Snowbird Classic as the Red Hawks dropped a 7-4 decision to Carthage College on Tuesday morning. The game was the first between the teams since the opener of the 1993 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship won by Montclair 5-1 en route to MSU's second national championship.

The Red Men (4-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning before Montclair struck back with a run in the bottom half of the second. Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second as Anthony Bowens (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) singled to left. A flyout got Moreno to third and he scored on a double-steal attempt to bring Montclair within 2-1.

Carthage would push the lead to 5-1 after five innings with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Montclair would get a run back in the eighth. Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a pair of ground outs as the Red Hawks drew within 5-2. The Red Men however added to more runs in the top of the ninth and then had to hold off an MSU rally in the bottom of the inning.

Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) singled and scored as Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) doubled to left field. Bowens added a one-out single to put runners at the corners and Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ / Spotswood)lofted a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-4.

But that would be as close as Montclair would get as reliever Michael Sanchez fanned the final hitter.
