Electrical Shutdown In College Hall Effects Access To University Technology

Over the Thanksgiving break, November 24-November 28, 2004, the final connections required in order to have College Hall connected to a single emergency generator are scheduled for completion. Although this work will not require the complete shut down of the facility, it will require the shut down of power in a number of areas of the first floor, including the core technology facilities that provide information technology services to the University. In addition, intermittent shutdowns effecting the rest of the building, though unlikely, are possible.

Beginning Thursday morning at approximately 6:00 a.m. electrical shut downs effecting technology related areas on the first floor of College Hall will occur. Those areas will not have power throughout the day Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Power will be restored to those areas by 8:00 p.m. Saturday night, November 27, 2004. In preparation for the electrical shutdown, the technology services shutdown will commence at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2004.

With the exception of the specific services listed below, technology services will not be available during this electrical shutdown period.

Technology services that WILL be available during the shutdown:

  • Email services
  • Blackboard
  • Main MSU Home Page (www.montclair.edu)
  • Sprague Library Web Server and associated on-line databases
  • Telephone Services (except as noted below)

All other technology services WILL NOT be available during the shutdown, including the following widely used applications:

  • "Web for Services," including Web for Students (WESS), Web for Faculty and Advisors and Web for Employees Raiser's Edge, the Alumni/Advancement system
  • The SCT/Plus suite of applications including (FRS, SIS and HRS)
  • Instructional Service Reports (ISR)

NOTE: In order to maintain telephone services during the shutdown, a one hour interruption of telephone services will be necessary from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, November 24, 2004 to move our telephone switch to temporary power. Furthermore, a telephone services outage of approximately one hour in duration will be necessary to return the switch to normal power on Saturday, November 27, 2004. A brief interruption of network connectivity (approximately 10 minutes) will accompany these telephone services procedures on the dates and times specified as well.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this work may cause, but do appreciate your patience and cooperation as we continue to make improvements to our campus.
