Powell Leads Women's Track and Field in First Outdoor Meet at Army's Dick Shea Open

West Point, NY (3/26/11) – Junior Ashley Powell (Orange, NJ / Marylawn of the Oranges), won the 200 meters and also added two other Top 10 finishes as the Montclair State outdoor track and field team opened up its 2011 season on a cold and blustery day at the Dick Shea Open held at the United States Military Academy.

Powell won the 200 meters and ran the anchor leg of the Red Hawks’ 4x100 relay team that placed second. Powell posted a time of 26.58 in winning the 200 meters in a race in which the Top 3 finishers were decided by .02 seconds. Heather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) was third in the event at 26.60 with Tanasia Linton (Newark, NJ / Newark Central) placing 15th at 27.74 seconds.

Powell and Gearity then teamed with Antoinetta Altilio (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) and Linton for a time of 51.48 in the 4x100 relay. Powell would also place ninth in the 400 meters (1:03.70) and was 16th in the long jump at 4.47 meters.

Gearity placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 meters while Sara Douma (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) was fourth in the triple jump at 10.43 meters. Brianna Myrick (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) registered a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters coming in at 2:23.07.  

Sophomore Ashadaya Patterson (Trenton, NJ / Northern Burlington) finished seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.54) with Altilio placing two spots back in ninth with a time of 18.26 seconds. Nicole Presti (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook) finished seventh in the 3000 meter steeplechase (13:47.35) and Angelina Ollo (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) and Michelle McNulty (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) placed 11th and 12th, respectively in the 400 meters at 1:04.06 and 1:04.16.

In the field events, Alyssa Johnson (Cliffwood Beach, NJ / Matawan) finished 13th in the javelin at 28.47 while Hannah Campbell (Forked River, NJ / Lacey) was 18th (21.79 meters). Campbell was 12th in the 400 meter hurdles recording a time of 1:14.38.  Deonna Overton (Linden, NJ / Linden) was 22nd in the shot put.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, April 2 as they compete at the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ.
