Softball Splits with Rowan as Winning Streak Ends at 17

Glassboro, NJ (4/17/11) – Montclair State extended its winning streak to 17 games with a 4-1 victory in the opener however Rowan University ended the run with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap as the Red Hawks and Profs split an NJAC doubleheader at the Rowan Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.

The loss by Montclair was the Red Hawks’ first in a month. MSU (21-5 overall, 9-1) NJAC last loss on March 17 when it fell to Springfield College, 5-1 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL. During its streak, Montclair outscored its opponents 116-14 and recorded seven shutouts. Only three times did MSU allow more than two runs in a game during that span.

In the opener, freshman Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) picked her 12th win of the season as she allowed just a solo home run in the fourth inning to Casey Roselle.  She also went 3-for-3 with an run batted in. 

Montclair got on the board with a run in the third. Hill helped her own cause with a leadoff single and moved to second on sacrifice by Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley)Stephanie Szeliga (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) singled to center scoring Hill as the Red Hawks grabbed the 1-0 lead. 

MSU loaded the bases in the fourth with one out, but could not extend the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Roselle homered to tie the game at 1-1. 

The Red Hawks would regain the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs as they took advantage of two Rowan errors. Katie Muglia (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and got to second via the first error on Dana Amato’s (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) ground ball. A sacrifice moved the runners up to second and third before Kelli O’Brien (Edison, NJ / Edison) singled to score pinch-runner Jamie Paulino (Linden, NJ / Linden). Amato also scored on an error as MSU took a 3-1 lead. Heather Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) followed with a double and Hill singled to score O’Brien for the three-run lead. 

Hill made that lead hold up as she allowed a pair of hits over the final three innings. 

O’Brien finished 2-for-4 for Montclair State, which collected eight hits in the game. 

In the second game, the Red Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 3-1 advantage.  Mozek led off with a walk and later scored on an error.  Szeliga came home on a fielder’s choice with Muglia at bat.  The Profs totaled six runs in the third to take the lead, 7-3.  

MSU pulled within two runs (7-3) after Szeliga recorded a two RBI double in the fifth.  Both teams scored two runs in the sixth that made the score 9-7. Amato blasted a two run homer to left field in the bottom of the inning, her eighth of the year.

In the seventh, Roselle had a RBI double for the Profs’ final run.  

Righthander Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) took the loss for Montclair State falling to 0-3. 

Gonzalez was 3-for-5 for MSU while Szeliga finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 19 as they travel to Union, NJ to face Kean University at 3:00 pm in an NJAC doubleheader.
