Baseball Completes Home-and-Home Sweep of William Paterson

Little Falls, NJ (4/22/11) – Senior shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) went 2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in a pair of run as Montclair State completed a sweep of its home-and-home series with local rival William Paterson posting a 12-2 win at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Freshman Anthony Bowens (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) and senior Andrew Himmelfarb (Upper Nyack, NY / Nyack) each added a pair of RBI as the Red Hawks improved to 15-11 overall, 7-5 in the NJAC with their second win over the Pioneers in as many days. MSU defeated William Paterson, 10-5 in Wayne on Thursday.

Sophomore righthander Zach Brown (New Vernon, NJ / Morristown) picked up his fifth win of the season as he went the first seven innings. Brown (5-1) allowed two runs and eight hits, struck six and did not walk a batter. Freshman leftyDylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) recorded the final six outs giving up a hit and striking out two.

Freshman lefthander Josh Jensen (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) took the loss to fall to 3-2.

The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second as Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) walked and stole second with one out before scoring on Cody Pace’s (Milltown, NJ / Spotswood) RBI single through the right side. 

Montclair’s lead would be increased to 4-0 in the third. Bionde singled home Himmelfarb and Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) with a base hit and Boggi lofted a sacrifice fly. 

The teams would trade runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings before MSU broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning. Bowens plate two runs with a single and Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ / North Hunterdon) walked with the bases loaded to force in the third run. Himmelfarb followed with a two-run single to center as Montclair State led 11-2. 

Kevin Miller (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) got the final Montclair run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single.

Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Montclair State while Pace went 2-for- with a run batted in.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 23 as they travel to Pomona, NJ to face Richard Stockton in an NJAC twinbill beginning at 11:30 am.
