Ewing, NJ (9/24/11) – The Montclair State men's soccer team posted its third straight victory as the Red Hawks edged The College of New Jersey, 2-1 on Saturday evening. MSU improved to 6-1-2 on the year, 2-0-1 in the NJAC while the Lions fell to 4-4-1, 0-2-1 in the league.
Sophomore Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) opened the scoring for the Red Hawks just over ten minutes into the match. He first-timed a rebound from just inside the box for his seventh tally of the year.
Just after the 30-minute mark, freshman Brian Cullen (Clementon, NJ/Highland) netted his second goal of the season. He lofted a well-placed shot from right-corner of the box to give Montclair a 2-0 lead.
In a contest that grew more physical as the game progressed, TCNJ had several quality scoring chances after the 25-minute mark of the second half. Junior Vince McEnroe (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) hit Sean Casey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) with a pass in transition. Casey then fed Chis Pisano (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen), who ripped a shot that just cleared the crossbar. Minutes later, Casey found Shaw in front, but Red Hawks goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ/Morris Catholic) was there to make a point-blank stop.
Junior Kevin Shaw (Brookside, NJ/West Morris Mendham) brought TCNJ within striking distance when he scored off a cross from senior Ed Kozic (Raritan, NJ/Immaculata) with 17 minutes remaining in the game. Just minutes after having a goal called back, the Lions broke through when Shaw volleyed a cross from Kozic.
Rogic had three stops in net, including one with 2:24 remaining, in posting his sixth win of the year.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 when they host Rutgers-Newark at MSU Soccer Park at 3:00 pm.
