Montclair State University held its 2012 Commencement exercises on Friday, May 18, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, conferring 4,262 degrees in science and mathematics, humanities and the social sciences, business, the arts, and education. The University conferred 3,183 baccalaureate degrees, 1,060 master’s degrees, and 19 doctoral degrees at the event.
Montclair State University President Susan A. Cole presided over the exercises and the Commencement address was delivered by Victoria Reggie Kennedy, an attorney and president of the Board of Trustees of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. Known for her work on health and education issues, especially as those issues affect women and children, Kennedy is the founding president of Common Sense about Kids and Guns, a not-for-profit coalition that works to reduce gun-related deaths and injuries to children in the United States.
After receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University, Kennedy challenged the graduates to have faith in themselves and to go out and make a positive difference. "You have all the right tools to make a positive difference in the life of your family, of your community, and of your nation because you have a degree from this outstanding university," she said.
"This great university has prepared you so well, and America has given you so much--we need you to give something back," she noted, stressing the importance of serving others. "You, in a nutshell, are our great hope for the future greatness of this country we love so much...Class of 2012, we're looking forward to the future you make. Our country, and our world are in good hands with you."
Speaking on behalf of the 2012 senior class was Louis Castano, a resident of Cedar Knolls, who received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with a minor in music. He will be teaching mathematics to middle school students in Summit, New Jersey this fall.
The graduate student speaker was Jim Fabros, who received a Master of Arts in teaching. The Jersey City resident was a member of the Newark-Montclair Urban Teacher Residency program and is looking forward to being a lifelong educator in the city of Newark.
