Turn your passion for Spanish into a meaningful teaching career!

You’ve already earned your bachelor’s degree, now it’s time to put it to work. Montclair’s Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification in Spanish prepares you to teach Spanish to students from preschool through 12th grade, equipping you with the skills and credentials to make a real difference for language learners.

Through a focused, 36-credit program, you’ll explore language pedagogy and cultural fluency, and gain hands-on experience in real New Jersey classrooms. Upon completion, students in the program are recommended to the New Jersey Department of Education for a teaching certificate. You’ll also be recommended for initial teacher certification by Montclair, giving you a direct path to the front of the classroom without needing a master’s degree.

As a certified Spanish teacher, you’ll expand access to language learning, support diverse student populations, and help shape a more inclusive educational future.

You’ll benefit from Montclair’s strong school partnerships, its nationally accredited and highly-regarded Teacher Education Program (CAEP), and a curriculum that blends theory with practical application. Montclair State University’s Teacher Education Program has been consistently recognized both nationally and regionally for its unique features, including its structure, partnerships, and curricular emphases. The program is considered a model for other colleges and universities and has continuously been accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since 1954.

If you’re ready to share your language skills, inspire learners, and step into a career that truly matters, this program gives you everything you need to get started.

Teacher Certification Requirements

As a condition of New Jersey’s Beginning Teacher Induction Program, candidates who have completed undergraduate or post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs must successfully complete one provisional year of teaching under a provisional certificate to be eligible for a permanent, standard New Jersey teaching certificate. Candidates who already possess a New Jersey standard certificate and who are seeking an additional teaching endorsement are exempt. Persons recommended by the University for certification will receive a Certificate of Eligibility With Advanced Standing which authorizes the holder to seek and accept offers of employment in New Jersey schools and in other states. The certificate is valid for the lifetime of its holder.

For certification as a P-12 teacher in New Jersey, current regulations require that applicants complete a minimum of 30 credits in a coherent sequence in the subject field, and a coherent sequence requires that at least 12 credits are completed at the advanced level of study (junior, senior or graduate level). If you require such subject area coursework for your certification program, please discuss this with an advisor during the admissions process.

*F1/J1 visa seeking students are not eligible for this program.
