Latin Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification

Teacher Certification

Professor leading class in amphitheatre

Bring a classical language to life in modern classrooms with Latin (Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification). This program combines deep linguistic and cultural training with practical teaching experience, preparing you for New Jersey state certification. You’ll gain advanced language skills as well as expertise in Roman literature, history, and culture while developing effective, engaging methods for teaching students of all grade levels (Preschool through grade 12).

Students with a baccalaureate degree who are interested in teaching Latin may pursue the post-baccalaureate program for teacher certification. Students design a course of study with their advisor to meet State and University certification standards. This program is also open to certified teachers who want to earn a second certification in Latin.

Teacher Certification Requirements

As a condition of New Jersey’s Beginning Teacher Induction Program, candidates who have completed undergraduate or post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs must successfully complete one provisional year of teaching under a provisional certificate to be eligible for a permanent, standard New Jersey teaching certificate. Candidates who already possess a New Jersey standard certificate and who are seeking an additional teaching endorsement are exempt. Persons recommended by the University for certification will receive a Certificate of Eligibility With Advanced Standing which authorizes the holder to seek and accept offers of employment in New Jersey schools and in other states. The certificate is valid for the lifetime of its holder.

For certification as a P-12 teacher in New Jersey, current regulations require that applicants complete a minimum of 30 credits in a coherent sequence in the subject field, and a coherent sequence requires that at least 12 credits are completed at the advanced level of study (junior, senior or graduate level). If you require such subject area coursework for your certification program, please discuss this with an advisor during the admissions process.

*F1/J1 visa seeking students are not eligible for this program.
