Men's Soccer Rolls Past Hunter, 3-0

Montclair, NJ (10/19/09) – Senior forward Michael Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland) tallied one goal and assisted on another as fifth-ranked Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over Hunter College at the MSU Soccer Park on Monday afternoon.

Junior forward Larry Geraghty (Cranford, NJ / St. Benedict’s Prep) had a goal for the Red Hawks, who improved to 14-0-1 overall. Montclair, now 5-0 against Hunter all-time, posted its 44th consecutive home victory extending its NCAA record.

Freshman goalkeepers Alexandre Ilic (Miami, FL / Miami Killian) and Murtaza Munir (Staten Island, NY / Benjamin Banneker Academy) each made one save for Hunter, which fell to 5-10-1 on the season with their third straight defeat.

Montclair wasted very little time getting on the board as Geraghty collected his seventh goal of the season 4:25 into the contest.  Cullen, named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, dribbled down near the end line before serving a pass to the near post for Geraghty, who banged home the short for the quick one-goal lead.

The Red Hawks posted 14 shots in the first half but could only get that one by freshman Ilic until the 43:15 mark as sophomore Mike Pytar (Califon, NJ / West Morris) scored his sixth goal of the year. Coron Short (Dayton, NJ / South Brunswick) and Paul DeMartinis (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) picked up the assists as Montclair led 2-0 at the break.

Cullen accounted for the final goal one-third of the way into the second period to put Montclair up 3-0. Sean Tyree (Somerset, NJ / South Brunswick) made cross from the right side onto the foot of Cullen, who recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the year. It was the second straight game that those two had combined on a goal as they connected once in MSU’s 4-1 win over Richard Stockton on Saturday that clinched the NJAC regular-season title for the Red Hawks.

MSU goalkeepers Teddy Ritter (Belford, NJ / Middletown North) and Tyler Stakiwicz (Delran, NJ / Delran) combined on the shutout with Ritter making the lone save for MSU. The shutout was Montclair’s eighth this season.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 21 as the Red Hawks play a non-conference contest at Neumann College beginning at 3:30 pm. The Hawks close out their regular-season on the road at CUNYAC rival Brooklyn College. Hunter is currently fourth in the CUNY standings.
