9:30-10:15am Identifying and Prioritizing Equity Issues in Today’s Society
  • Frame the issues impacting our communities locally, nationally, and globally
  • Overview of specific issues in the national news and those impacting college campuses
  • Facilitate dialogue to uncover the issues affecting campus community
  • Record these issues for further discussion during the Social Justice Skills Lab

10:30-11:15am Skill-Building Session: Communication Strategies for Difficult Dialogues: Engaging Perspectives Different from Your Own
  • Frame the current state of social justice dialogue and provide context regarding the need to get outside of our “ideological bunkers” (Brene Brown) in order to promote deep social change with one another
  • Discussion of “call out culture” in social justice communities and offering strategies to “call in”, to stay in community, when we have differing perspectives
  • Facilitate learning and reflection regarding effective interpersonal communication strategies for conflict and difficult dialogues
11:15am-12:00pm Social Justice Skills Lab
  • Facilitate activity to practice engaging in dialogue pertaining to social equity issues using the communication strategies learned in previous session
  • Provide opportunities to engage in dialogue regarding specific issues and rotate between issue tables at designated times
  • Provide framing questions and communication strategies for each issue table to aid in dialogue
12:00-12:30pm Lunch Break
12:30-1:00pm Establishing Issue Working Groups
  • Participants spent the morning identifying social equity issues of importance to the campus community, now, we will ask each individual to join one issue working group
  • These issue working groups will convene in strategy session and creating action and accountability plans
1:00-1:45pm Strategy Sessions in Issue Working Groups
  • Facilitate strategic planning session within Issue Working Groups
  • Provide framework for individuals to engage within their respective groups
1:45-2:00pm Bio Break
2:00-3:00pm Creating Action & Accountability Plans
  • Issue Working Groups will create Action Plan, or identify next steps, resources, and goals to guide the implementation of action for their issue area
  • Create an Accountability Plan, which includes people assigned to tasks, timelines, and plans for next group convening
3:00-3:30pm Share Out Action & Accountability Plans
3:30-4:00pm Debrief & Closing Activity
