The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSND) was established in 1969, as the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. The Department's name was later changed to its present one to reflect the broader scope of the fields of study comtained within it. Prior to 1969, the undergraduate and graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology were part of the Speech and Theatre Department, with courses of study extending at least as far back as the 1950s.
From that time to the present, The Department has developed and offered programs that reflect growth, specialization, and commitment to helping professionals and individuals with speech, language and hearing disorders. The Department's programs are designed to provide basic and advanced professional preparation, with a strong commitment to theoretical and research foundations of clinical intervention. The Department now offers a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology (MA), a clinical doctoral degree in Audiology (AuD) , a research doctorate in Communication Sciences and Disorders (PhD) and a minor in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
The mission of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is to prepare students to be audiologists and speech-language pathologists to be successful practitioners in their disciplines and meet requirements for certification and licensure, and to prepare scientists in communication sciences and disorders to be successful academic researchers.
The Clinical Doctoral program in Audiology (AuD) and the Master of Arts (MA) program in Speech-Language Pathology at Montclair State University are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), 2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, Maryland 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700.
