Curriculum Guide for Minor in Creative Writing

The English department offers a minor in creative writing, open to students with any major. See below for curriculum guide, and see our  Creative Writing FAQ for additional information. Note that although the creative writing minor overlaps with the English major, but only up to six credits in one may count toward the other.

A. Required Courses 9 s.h.

ENWR 213: Introduction to Fiction Writing   3
ENWR 311: Intermediate Fiction Workshop 3
ENWR 411: Advanced Fiction Workshop 3
             or
ENWR 212: Introduction to Poetry Writing 3
ENWR 312: Intermediate Poetry Workshop 3
ENWR 412: Advanced Poetry Workshop 3

B. Elective Courses 9 s.h.

1. Students must select two ENWR courses in genres other than that of their required three-course sequence

ENWR 212: Introduction to Poetry Writing 3
ENWR 213: Introduction to Fiction Writing  3
ENWR 205: Creative Nonfiction 3
ENWR 215: Beginning Drama Workshop 3
ENWR 311: Intermediate Fiction Workshop 3
ENWR 312: Intermediate Poetry Workshop 3
ENWR 318: Intermediate Drama Workshop 3
ENWR 411: Advanced Fiction Workshop 3
ENWR 412: Advanced Poetry Workshop 3
THTR 391: [Advanced] Playwriting 3
FILM 230: Introduction to Screenwriting 3
FILM 310: Screenwriting I 3
FILM 410: Screenwriting II 3
ENWR 250: Special Topics in Writing 3

[other genres, such as memoir, are offered occasionally; check with department, since not all ENWR 250 courses qualify]                                                                                                                                               

2. One literature course in chosen genre

Any ENGL or ENLT course listed as satisfying the English department’s genre requirement in fiction or poetry (either on registrar’s list of genre courses or by departmental credit adjustment) 3
