For the second year in a row, many Montclair State Accounting alumni gathered for the Second Annual Accounting Alumni Reception at the Valley Regency on May 7.
Jeanne Marano, Executive Director of Alumni Relations kicked off the event with a welcome to alumni, and spoke about the many ways alumni can stay connected to the University.
“We rely on your engagement in a number of meaningful ways,” Marano noted. “From attending events and recruiting new students, to participating in programs that connect you with current student to serve as mentors, speak in a class; provide internships – and tonight – to network.”
Professor Frank Aquilino, Chair, Department of Accounting, Law and Taxation then welcomed students and introduced members of the Accounting, Law and Taxation Advisory Board in attendance, including Ralph Albert Thomas, Joanne Barry ’77, Tom Lawless ’90, Melissa Sacchiero ’98 and Irene Douma, Professor Emerita.
Dean Chrite followed up on Professor Aquilino’s remarks, and introduced Tom Lawless ’90, Partner, Process and Controls Services Leader, EY, who spoke about his student experience, the value of his degree, and the importance of networking.
Professor Aquilino notes that for the second year in a row, the event was successful and beneficial to both students and alumni:
“You could feel the great chemistry in the room throughout the evening among all participants. You knew it was a success when many of the attendees were still interacting at 9:00 p.m., even though the event was officially over at 8:30 p.m.”
Students then had a chance to participate in a networking exercise designed to help current students learn the value of building a strong network. The exercise gave them the opportunity to meet with many successful alumni, faculty and staff, and employers.
Steve Danatos ’75, Managing Director, 3T Global Solutions, was also in attendance and thought that the networking exercise was a success:
“I enjoyed the format of the networking event. There was a large enough turnout to make the evening interesting, yet still had an intimate feel. The students were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and easily communicated their status, plans and experiences at Montclair State. I was impressed to see that the students had "business cards" with them. It is a great way to network and connect.”
