The Montclair State University Department of Theatre and Dance Announces Its 2007/2008 Season

Season includes a world premiere, The Full Monty and unique dance works.

The Department of Theatre and Dance presents a fine season filled with first-rate student performances. The season runs from September through May and includes notable works including D Man in the Waters, The Full Monty, Katrina, and SubUrbia. All ticket to all events are $15.

Works-A-Foot will take place in Memorial Auditorium under the artistic direction of Lori Katterhenry on December 5, 6, 7, 2007 @ 7:30 pm; December 7, 2007 @ 1:00 pm; December 8, 2007 @ 8:00 pm; and December 9, 2007 @ 2 pm. The first in a year-long tribute to American choreographers, this concert of stellar proportions will include a piece from Bill T. Jones’s D Man in the Water set on MSU students by Roz LeBlanc, former dancer with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company.

A production of The Full Monty will be mounted in the Alexander Kasser Theater and directed by Clay James.  Performances are November 15, 16, 2007 @ 7:30 pm; November 16, 2007 @ 1:00pm; November 17, 2007 @ 1:00pm & 8:00 pm;  and November 18, 2007 @ 2:00 pm.  This salute to the human spirit is the poignant story of six unemployed, out-of-shape mill workers from Buffalo, New York, who concoct a scheme to make some extra cash as male strippers.   As they work through their fears and anxieties, they discover that the strength they find in each other gives them the courage to face their demons.

Katrina, mounted in the Fox Theatre, is a world premiere created and written by Suzanne Trauth and Lisa Brenner with performance dates on December 5, 6, 7, 2007 @ 7:30 pm; December 7, 2007 @ 1:00pm; December 8, 2007 @ 8:00 pm and December 9, 2007 @ 2:00 pm.  The premiere of this original play is inspired by true stories of individuals facing one of America’s most challenging crises.  Both tragically heartbreaking and poignantly uplifting, Katrina chronicles the journeys of New Orleans residents whose lives are forever changed: some choose to wait out the storm; some can’t get out; some create a new life in a new city; and some leave a comfortable life elsewhere to help rebuild a broken city.

To roundup the highlights of this season, Jorge Cacheiro directs Eric Bogosian’s subUrbia in the Fox Theatre with performance dates on April 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 2008 @ 7:30pm; April 11, 2008 @ 1:00 pm; April 5, 12, 2008 @ 8:00 pm; and April 6, 13, 2008 @ 2:00 pm. Bogosian’s dark drama looks at one night in the lives of a group of 20-something slackers hanging out in front of a convenience store in a contemporary suburb.  A portrait of disaffection and desperation, subUrbia explores the jealousy, misogyny and violence that pervade the lives of young people without a purpose.
