"Trojan Women – An Asian Story"- a Hit from This Year’s Vienna Festival! Performed in Korean with Live Pansori

At the Alexander Kasser Theater: Thursday, October 18, 2007 @ 7:30pm Saturday, October 20, 2007 @ 8:00pm and Sunday, October 21, 2007 @ 3:00pm

Trojan Women---An Asian Story is based on The Trojan Women by Euripides. One of the recent hits of this year’s Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival), this powerful piece examines the long tradition of violence against women in times of war and the phenomenon of Comfort Women. This Trojan Women blends the classic Euripides tale with the true stories of the exploitation of ‘comfort women’ in Korea during World War II when thousands of women were forced to work in ‘comfort stations’ for the benefit of Japanese soldiers. The end of conflict is never the end of trauma and suffering for women continues to this day in places like Rwanda and Bosnia. The comfort women issue is still a hot button issue as evidenced this month in Japan with the sudden resignation of Prime Minster, Shinzo Abe. One of the reasons for his diminishing popularity was his insistence that there is no documentation proving that the Japanese Army forced Korean and other Asian women into prostitution.

Trojan Women—An Asian Story, conceived and directed by Aida Karic, uses historical and biographical texts from former ‘comfort women’ and tells their stories within the narrative form of the Pansori, Korea’s native opera. Pansori tells a themed story similar to that of musical theater, in this case with only four musicians, a singer and three drummers. This simple musical quartet gives a haunting universality to the epic stories they tell. Celebrated Korean composer Seung Ah-Oh whose works have been performed and honored worldwide composes the music for this powerful theater piece. The choreography is by another Korean, Samjim Kim and the lighting and set design is by Kurt Hentschlager of the world famous electronic instillation company Granular Synthesis. Trojan Women—An Asian Story will be performed in Korean with English surtitles.

Trojan Women—An Asian Story is a co-production of Schauspeilhaus, Vienna, Wiener Festwochen, The Wuturi Players, Seoul Arts Center and Peak Performances @Montclair State University.

On Saturday, October 20th there will be a post performance discussion with Aida Karic and Randy Gener, Senior Editor of American Theatre Magazine.
