The John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University
presents The Beatrice Crawford Memorial Concert featuring the MSU Symphony
Orchestra with special guest Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper. This special event features the world
premiere of The Star Across the Ocean, a work by American composer Scott Davenport Richards. Also
on this program is Symphony no. 5 in C-sharp minor by Gustav Mahler. This performance is under the baton of Paul
Hostetter.
In A Star Across the Ocean, composer
and lyricist Scott Davenport Richards uses the Jazz idiom in a symphonic
context to imagine Paul Robeson, Josephine Baker, Quincy Jones, and his parents
in all of their differing ambivalent relationships to Paris in 1965. This world
premiere work for four voices and orchestra features “Tony” award winner, Chuck
Cooper, Darius De Haas, Kimberly Jajuan, and Julia Murney with the MSU Symphony
Orchestra.
This free public performance, the
Beatrice Crawford Memorial Concert, is supported by a generous grant from the
Keating Crawford Foundation. It is an annual event presented at Montclair State
University in memory of Beatrice Crawford, a Montclair musician who was the
director of two choral groups “The Madrigals” and “The Choraliers.”
