The Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State University presents Katrina: The K Word, an original play inspired by true stories of individuals facing one of America’s most devastating events. Both tragically heartbreaking and poignantly uplifting, Katrina chronicles the journeys of twelve New Orleans residents from all walks of life whose lives are forever changed: some choose to wait out the storm; some can’t get out; some create a new life in a new city; and some leave a comfortable life elsewhere to help rebuild a broken city. Performances run from December 5th through the 9th and tickets are only $15 for this event. This student production is part of Peak Performances @ Montclair.
Katrina, known as an ‘equal opportunity storm’, disrupted or destroyed the lives of countless thousands in New Orleans. Lisa Brenner and Suzanne Trauth, co-creators of Katrina: The K Word, spent time in the devastated city in May of 2007 and interviewed over 25 victims to form the basis of this work. After listening to the unimaginable stories of these people, Brenner and Trauth realized that using these individual’s own words in retelling the stories best relayed the impact of their collective experiences. Lisa Brenner and Suzanne Trauth chose 12 of these survivors to serve as the characters of the play; their stories revealing the different levels of hope, pain and despair that began before the storm hit and continues to this day.
The purpose of Katrina: The K Word is to bring awareness to the complete impact of the devastation that Katrina left behind. The director comments, “If you live in America, you know about 9-11. If you live in America, you need to also know about Katrina.” For many victims, they had to make decisions that would forever change the course of their lives.
Katrina: The K Word is both a human story as well as a stark history lesson. A live-music ensemble from the John J. Cali School of Music plays New Orleans styled music during the performance enhancing this powerful 90-minutes long piece. Join the cast, creators and special guests for a short discussion following the performances on December 6th.
