New Brunswick, NJ (2/24/08) – Freshman Galina Loutchouk (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) and senior Kristine Bates (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) each set new school records as the Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out competition at the 2008 Metropolitan Conference Championships held at the Sonny Werblin Rec Center at Rutgers University on Sunday.
The MSU women’s team placed seventh in the field of 19 teams as the Red Hawks amassed 577 points while setting four school records. Meanwhile the men’s squad was eighth (of 15 teams) with 452.5 points.
Loutchouk and Bates each set their second new mark during the event. Loutchouk placed seventh in the 1650 freestyle as she swam 18:43.10 to break her own mark of 18:44.24 set at the Kutztown Golden Bear Invitational in November. Bates notched her second school record in the 100 freestyle as she swam 53.98 during the preliminaries. The time broke Bates’ own record of 54.04 set a year ago at the same meet. She then swam 54.30 in the finals to place fifth, her third Top 10 finish in the championships.
On the men’s side, senior Ricky Miller ( Seaside Park, NJ / Monsignor Donovan) recorded his third Top 8 finish in the championships as he placed seventh in the 200 butterfly. Miller, competing in his final meet for MSU, posted a time of 1:58.72. He then teamed with John Adams (Wharton, NJ / Pope John XXIII), Matt Hyde ( Clifton, NJ / Clifton) and Blaise Lacca ( Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) for an eighth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:17.11).
Adams placed seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:00.51) while Kurtz was 10 th in the 200 breaststroke, swimming 2:16.96 in the finals after a 2:16.12 in the preliminaries.
