Philadelphia, PA (4/5/08) – In March, junior Eugene Asimou (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) and freshmen Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) and Will Brown (Gloucester, NJ / Palmyra) each represented Montclair State at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. After Saturday’s performance at the Penn Invitational, the trio may have the opportunity to do it at the Outdoor Championships in May.
Each posted an NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship qualifying mark as the Red Hawks turned in several Top 15 performances.
Riddick, the indoor national champion in the shot put, will get a chance to perhaps add an outdoor title as well as she hit an automatic mark in the event as she bested a field of 21 competitors with a throw of 14.27 meters (.07 better than the automatic qualifying standard). It is the second straight week that Riddick has captured the shot put. She then went on to finish 12 th in the discus (field of 26) with a throw of 36.13 meters and 15 th in the hammer throw (36.41 meters) in a field of 25 athletes.
Asimou earned his first outdoor win in the shot put as he took the event with a throw of 15.74 meters to put his name on the Provisional Qualifying list. Asimou also placed ninth in the hammer throw with a best mark of 45.30 meters.
Brown, who competed in the 55 hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships, is now on the provisional list in the 100 hurdles for the outdoor season as he won that event with a time of 14.60 (.35 seconds better than the provisional mark).
Elsewhere, sophomore Judline Tumson ( Newark, NJ / Arts) had a pair of Top 10 finishes. Tumson placed seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 12.48 and was eighth in the 200 meters (25.88). Freshman James Pszwaro (Carney’s Point, NJ / Penns Grove) was seventh in the javelin (54.89 meters).
The Red Hawks are back on the track next Saturday, April 12 as they compete in the Bill Omeltchenko Meet held at the United State Merchant Marine Academy.
