Jennifer Jimenez ( Linden, NJ / Linden) and Jackie Ferranti ( Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield) each added three RBI as the Red Hawks improved to 24-2 on the year while running their winning streak to 17.
The losses dropped the Dolphins below the .500 mark at 12-14.
The games were shifted to Kean’s brand new facility after a public safety advisory was issued at Montclair State following a threat to the campus community for Thursday.
In the opener McCrea picked up her 12 th victory of the season (12-3) as she allowed just a base hit to Nicole Estrada ( Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) to lead off the sixth inning. McCrea struck out nine and walked three before giving way to Persico , who tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the game.
Montclair State would get a run in the second as Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) singled with two out and advanced to second on an error. Whitney Driver ( Montville, NJ / Morristown-Beard) followed with an RBI double to give the Red Hawks the 1-0 lead. MSU added another run in the fourth as pinch-hitter Cheryl Bodak ( South River, NJ / South River) drew a bases-loaded walk.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth inning as freshman catcher Kacie Neurouter ( Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) delivered and RBI single and Kelly Karp ( Edison, NJ / Edison) brought home another run with a ground out. Montclair’s final run came courtesy of a two-out, run-scoring single by Jimenez.
Krysta Kinsella ( Middletown, NJ / Middletown) took the loss to fall to 8-8. Kinsella walked four and struck out one.
Nance, Shockley and Driver each had two hits for MSU, which collected 11 in the game.
Game Two saw the Red Hawks jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Durkin drove in a run with a ground out and Neurouter slapped a run-scoring single. MSU would add to its lead in the second with four runs, three coming on Durkin’s bases-clearing double down the left field line.
MSU’s lead was extended to 8-0 in the third on bases-loaded walks issued to Jimenez and Durkin and the Red Hawks put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ferranti singled home two of those runs and Jimenez added another with a base hit. Pinch-hitters Jill Leonard ( Clifton, NJ / Clifton) and Megan Bryson ( Atco, NJ / Paul VI) capped the scoring with RBI singles.
The offense proved to be more than enough for Karp, who improved to 10-0. The lefty struck out three and walked one as she went the first four innings. Persico struck out one as she retired all three batters to preserve the shutout .
Ferranti finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored for the Red Hawks, who collected 13 in the game.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 12 as the Red Hawks travel to The College of New Jersey for an NJAC doubleheader with the Lions beginning at Noon.
