Blaine, DiBenedetto Lead Women's Lax Past Rowan, 13-9
Sophomore Jamie Hudacko ( Montville, NJ / Montville) added a pair of goals as the Red Hawks evened their record at 6-6 with their second consecutive win. The victory was also MSU’s second straight against the Profs after 13 consecutive losses dating back to 1980. Last year, Montclair recorded a 15-12 win in Glassboro.
Junior Lauren Crennan ( Pottstown, PA / Owen J. Roberts) scored three times for the Profs, who fell to 11-3 as their 10-game winning streak came to an end. Rowan last lost on March 8 to Gettysburg College.
Rowan jumped out to a 1-0 lead 91 seconds into the contest as Ali Goodman ( Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape) scored on an unassisted tally. Montclair responded less than a minute later as Blaine found Hudacko for the first of four straight goals for the Red Hawks. Jennifer Tanis ( Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson) scored with 25:05 left to give Montclair State the lead and Blaine collected her first 28 seconds later as Montclair went up 3-1. DiBendetto’s goal gave Montclair at three-goal cushion however Rowan trimmed the lead to 5-3 on an Alli Dickey ( Stevensville, MD / Kent Island) marker with 11:53 to go. But MSU scored the final three goals of the half, two by Blaine, as Montclair led 8-3 at the break.
Goals by Blaine in Hudacko early in the second half made it a five-goal run as the Red Hawks increased their lead to 10-3 with 26:59 left in the contest. The teams traded the next six scores, including one by DiBendetto on a free-position attempt as Montclair was up 13-6 with 10:19 remaining. Rowan though did not go away as Crennan scored with 7:45 left and Kaitlyn Molzon’s ( Howell, NJ / St. Rose) tally 45 second later pulled the Profs within five. Carly Welsh ( Allenwood, NJ /Wall) scored just over a minute later as the score was trimmed to 13-9. But Montclair goalkeeper Talia Katz (Lower Merion, PA / Lower Merion) made two saves over the final five minutes as the Red Hawks held on for the victory.
Katz stopped 10 shots in the game while Rowan goalkeeper Alicia Mannino (Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made nine saves.
Tanis recorded five ground balls, three draws and three caused turnovers for MSU, which was out shot in the game, 31-23. The Red Hawks won 15 draws in the game, including three by Morgan MacPhee ( Toms River, NJ / Toms River East). Crennan had three draws for Rowan while Kerry O’Donnell ( Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) and Goodman registered five and four ground balls, respectively.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 as the Red Hawks host second-ranked The College of New Jersey at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm.
