In what was
mainly a defensive battle played in the middle of the field, Montclair
State netted 232-yards total offense to the Mustangs 169, holding the
153 to 48 advantage in yards gained on the ground in the running game.
Montclair put numbers on the scoreboard first, capping off a 14 play,
67-yard drive with a 40-yard field goal from Marco Capozzoli (Bloomfield, NJ) at 7:01 in the first quarter.
At 14:17 the second, a Morrisville State fumble traveled through the
back of the endzone on a punt attempt, leading to a Montclair team
safety. Within seconds, Byron Lewin (Carteret, NJ)
returned the kick-off 68-yards to the Mustangs 10-yard line, setting up
the one play, 10-yard rush by Bliss for the score at 13:57, giving the
Red Hawks the 12-0 lead at the half.
Morrisville’s only score of the contest came with 1:10 remaining in the
fourth quarter, as quarterback Billy Poling (Waretown, NJ) connected
with wide receiver Maurice Mitchelson (Bronx, NY) in the corner of the
endzone for the six-yard score, capping off the 12 play, 70-yard last
effort drive.
Poling completed 17-of-33 passes for 121 yards and a score on the
afternoon. Mitchelson led the receiving corps with four catches for
46-yards. Peter Enriquez (Staten Island, NY) tallied 33 yards on the
ground for Morrisville, with Poling adding 14.
Defensively, Dale Ross (Syracuse, NY), Anthony Brown (Rochester, NY)
and Luke Visingard (Endicott, NY), each recorded eight tackles to lead
the Morrisville State unit, Ross with five solo.
Montclair’s Tom Fischer (Livingston, NJ) connected on 6-of-21 attempts for 79 yards on the afternoon, his longest to leading receiver Yessy Tejada (Weehawken, NJ) for 30-yards.
Cornell Hunt (North Brunswick, NJ)
led the defensive unit for Montclair, tallying seven tackles, four
solo, while recording two pass break ups. Nick Giangrande (Bellville,
NJ) added six.
