Montclair, NJ (1/17/09) – Sophomore guard Jamilee Pflug ( Clark, NJ /Arthur L. Johnson) scored 20 points while junior forward Kisandra Ayanbeku (Burlington, MA / Randolph) netted 18 points along with seven rebounds as Montclair stretched its winning streak to 10 games with a 77-70 win over Richard Stockton in an NJAC inter-divisional matchup at the MSU Student Recreation Center on Saturday.
Freshman Jaime Ericson ( Flemington, NJ/ Hunterdon Central) scored 13 points off the bench as the Red Hawks moved to11-4 on the year while staying unbeaten in conference play at 6-0 in the league’s North Division. The 10-game winning streak is the longest by Montclair State since a streak of the same number during the 1994-95 season.
Freshman center LaTonya Oliver ( West Berlin, NJ/ Overbrook) pumped in a game-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Ospreys, who fell to 3-12 overall, 0-5 in the NJAC South Division.
A closely played contest through the first seven minutes, Stockton took a 13-10 lead with 12:53 to go as Monique Garcia ( Atlantic City, NJ/ Atlantic City) scored on a layup. Pflug answered with five straight points to give Montclair the lead, but Kelley Guarrera ( Shamong, NJ / Shawnee)tied the game at 15-15 with 11:35 remaining.
The Red Hawks then took control with a 14-3 run over the next two minutes to take the lead for good. Stefanie Phillips ( Jersey City, NJ / St. Dominic Academy) ignited the run with a three-point play and Ayanbeku’s step-back three-pointer gave MSU a 23-17 advantage. Catherine Cristino (Farmingdale, NJ / Colts Neck) scored a layup and Pflug added a three-point play before Jenna Totaro (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) finished off the spurt with a three-pointer as Montclair led 29-18 with nine minutes left.
Richard Stockton would not go away and trimmed the lead to38-32 at the half. In the second period, Montclair would get the lead back to 11 at 52-41 on an Ayanbeku layup with 16:18 to play, but the Ospreys fought back getting within six at 53-47 on a layup by Oliver at13:04.
MSU would boost its lead back to 65-51 with 6:19 to go on a Cristino three-pointer from the corner, however the Ospreys continued to fight back getting the deficit down to five as Ashley Hart (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/ Peddie School) hit from in close. But Marianne McGovern ( Fair Lawn, NJ/ Paramus Catholic) hit two free throws with 29 seconds left to push the lead back to 73-66.
Ericson finished with 13 points and four rebounds for Montclair State which overcame an 18-of-29performance at the free throw line. Cristino had nine points and six rebounds while Jackie Berry ( Tuckerton, NJ / Pinelands Regional) added six points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Julia Fagan ( New Britain, CT / New Britain) had 12points and nine rebounds for Richard Stockton while Kristin Sciarrillo ( Edison, NJ/ Edison) added six points and 10 rebounds. Garcia was the third Osprey with double digits finishing with 10 points along with four assists and four steals.Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, January 20 as the Red Hawks battle Wesleyan University in a non-conference matchup at 7:30 pm. Richard Stockton is back home in Pomona on Wednesday (January 21) to take on Rowan at 6:00 pm.
