Women's Lacrosse Comeback Against Va. Wesleyan Falls Short

Virginia Beach, VA (3/17/09) -- Bethany Adomanis' second goal during Tuesday's 12-8 non-conference victory over Montclair State University in women's lacrosse could rank right up there with "game-winning goals" for the Marlins.

Adomanis (Arnold, Md./Severn Archbishop Spalding) took the ball a couple steps from midfield and then charged toward the goal from the left side to put in an unassisted goal that not only gave the Marlins (4-3) an 11-7 lead, but also stopped Montclair State's momentum

The Red Hawks (0-5) put on charge in the final minutes to scored back-to-back goals by Carla Davis (Decatur, GA / Decatur) and Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) to pull within a 10-7 score with 4:24 still remaining to be played.  It was the closest the Hawks had been to the Marlins since the early minutes of the game.

But, Adomanis' goal squelched the comeback at that point and reignited the Marlins, who pushed out to a 12-7 lead with junior Laura Norris (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) scored on a free position shot with 1:11 remaining.  Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) provided the last goal for MSU, also on a free position shot, with 57 seconds remaining.

MSU bolted out to a 2-0 lead in the game, but VWC came back with seven unanswered goals to open up a 7-2 lead at halftime.  Norris scored three goals in the run and finished as the game's leading scorer with five goals and three assists.

Aimee Sraver (Timonium, Md./St. Paul's) also had two goals for the Marlins, who received scores from senior Kasey Marchwicki (Boyds, Md./Poolesville), sophomore Jodan Venetis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks), and rookie Courtney Williams (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown).

Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) and Davis posted two goals each for MSU.

Senior goalie Ashley Sippel (Leesburg, Va./Ashburn Stone Bridge) recorded 12 saves for the Marlins.  Tracey Manella (Haworth, NJ / Northern Valley - Demarest) had 10 saves for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 21 as MSU hosts the Eagles of Eastern University at 1:00 pm.
