Riddick Posts NCAA Automatic Mark in Outdoor Opener

West Long Branch, NJ (3/28/09) – Sophomore Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr), the two-time reigning NCAA indoor champion, will get a chance for an outdoor title as she posted an automatic qualifying mark in winning the shot put at the Monmouth University Season Opener on Saturday.

Freshman Jackie Philbin (Lincoln Park, NJ / Boonton) captured the discus in her first collegiate meet as the Red Hawks put together several solid performances in their first outdoor meet of the season against a heavily-dominated Division I field.

Riddick, who two weeks ago captured her second straight indoor title, will get a chance at an outdoor championship as she set a new meet record in winning the event. Riddick, who also set a personal-best in the event, threw 14.42 meters (47-feet, 3.75-inches) as she broke the meet mark of 14.16 set by Ash Cyrelli of Rutgers in 2006. Riddick easily surpassed the NCAA automatic mark of 14.20 meters and will be in the field of competitors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships which will be held May 21-23 at Marietta College in Ohio.

Philbin bested Monmouth’s Amanda Root by eight inches for the top spot in the discus. Philbin registered a winning throw of 115-feet, 9-inches.

Anna Gleason (Butler, NJ / Butler) registered a pair of Top 10 finishes as she was fifth in the high jump and sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.38). Evelyn Sha (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) was seventh in the high jump while Jennifer Murphy (Maple Shade, NJ / Maple Shade) placed 10th in the 100 meter hurdles.

Epiphany Sams (Englewood, NJ / Paramus Catholic) finished 10th in the 100 meter dash (14.16) while freshman Marline Edmond (Elizabeth, NJ / Elizabeth) was 11th in the 100 meters (14.18) and 13th in the 200 meters (28.74).  Leslie Dobbs (Palmyra, NJ / Palmyra) placed 11th in the javelin (21.41 meters).

On the men’s side, junior Adenford Jean-Philippe (Irvington, NJ / Irvington) finished third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.81.

John Tancer (Montville, NJ / Montville) placed ninth in the shot put (13.84 meters) with Michael Johnson (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) and David Helterbran (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) finished 11th (12.87 meters) and 13th (12.54 meters), respectively. Robert East (Passaic, NJ / Passaic) finished 13th in the 100 meters (12.05). Glen Murphy (Sparta, NJ / Sparta) was 13th (35.27 meters) and James Luginsland (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) placed 14th (34.48 meters) in the discus.

Terry Iavarone (North Arlington, NJ / North Arlington) posted a time of 4:25.15 in the 1500 meters while senior Tony Williams (Newark, NJ / Malcolm X. Shabazz) made his first appearance for MSU after missing the outdoor season in 2008.

The Red Hawks continue their outdoor season on Saturday, April 4 as they compete in the Penn Invitational at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
