Field Hockey Drops OT Contest with Stevens, 1-0

Montclair, NJ (9/16/09) – Freshman forward Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, NJ / Shore Regional) scored with 2:46 remaining in the first overtime period as Stevens knocked off Montclair State 1-0 in an NCAA Division III field hockey contest at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Junior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) stopped six shots as the Ducks won their second straight, improving to 4-1 on the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) had three saves for Montclair State, which had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. The Red Hawks are now 3-2.

In what has become the norm for both teams in the early part of the season, 70 minutes was not enough to decide a winner. In 10 combined games this season, MSU and Stevens have played eight one-goal contests, with six being pushed into overtime.

In the extra period, neither team would be able to muster any offensive threats until the final goal. Sophomore Jillian Price (West Islip, NY / West Islip) took possession of the ball at the 20 yardline and moved inside the circle before sliding a pass over to Chavez on the left side. Chavez made a turn-around stop and first a shot from 10 yards out past Bosland into the left side of the cage for the game-winner – her second of the year.

Until that point, the two squads played even field hockey although Montclair would get the more of the chances in the first half. Outshooting the Ducks 6-4 in the opening period, Griggs made two early saves before stopping back-to-back attempts by Jessica Murphy (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) and Melissa Buttray (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) on a penalty corner at 29:15.

Back the other way the Ducks came and this time it was Bosland keeping the game scoreless as she denied Lauren Griggs (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) on consecutive shots as the contest went scoreless into the break.

Griggs and Bosland made only one save each in the second half, however each would be huge.

With 13:30 to play, the Red Hawks had a perfect give-and-go between Annalisa Valerio (Norristown, PA / Kendrick Kennedy) and Melissa Flaherty (Fishkill, NY / John Jay). The two drove the ball to within 10 yards before Flaherty unleashed a shot that Griggs made a blocker save on.

Bosland’s turn came with a minute to go as Stevens earned its first penalty corner of the contest. Erin Broderick (East Setauket, NY / Ward Melville) inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Kara Borzillo (Mount Laure, NJ / Lenape) blistered a shot that Bosland kicked away sending the game into OT.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 19 with road contests. Montclair State heads to Selinsgrove, PA to face Susquehanna University at 1:00 pm. Stevens will open up Empire 8 play at Nazareth College at the same time.
