Swimming and Diving Closes Out Dual Season With Sweep of WPU

Montclair, NJ (2/6/10) – Sophomore Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) won three individual events and led a relay team to another on the men’s side while freshman Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) duplicated the same for the women as the Montclair State swimming and diving team closed out its dual meet schedule with a sweep of local and conference rival William Paterson on Saturday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Junior Galina Loutchouk (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) won three individual events as the MSU women knocked off the Pioneers 161-119 to finish the year at 5-5 overall, 2-2 in the NJAC. Meanwhile the men topped WPU, 179-119 to end the season at 6-5 overall, 1-3 in the conference.

Lee swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay as he teamed with Sean Chambrovich (Allenhurst, NJ / Red Bank Regional), Nikolas Lumkong (Andover, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) for a time of 1:41.79. He would go on to sweep both breaststroke events winning the 100 in a time of 1:02.68 before clocking in at 2:21.24 in the 200. Lee completed his outstanding afternoon with a win in the 200 individual medley as he led a 1-2-3 MSU finish (2:06.37). Westerberg was second at 2:08.12 with Michael Adams (Wharton, NJ / Pope John XIII) finishing third (2:13.79).

Like Lee, Vallone got the women’s team off to a good start as she swam the anchor leg of the winning 200 medley relay team. Vallone, Lauren Uckar (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), Laura Spadoni (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) and Laura Flynn (Andover, NJ / Lenape Valley) posted a time of 1:59.11. The freshman then won all three short freestyle events. She posted a time of 26.32 in the 50 free and went 57.01 in the 100 before finishing off her day with a time of 2:06.74 in the 200 freestyle.

Loutchouk scored her points in the long distance races as she won the 500 and 1000 freestyles with times of 5:39.60 and 11:51.31, respectively. Senior Jessica Patalano (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) was second in each event as she went 11:56.91 in the 1000 free and 5:48.78 in the 500 freestyle. Loutchouk got her third win in the 200 fly (2:22.81) as MSU took the top three spots. Flynn (2:24.51) was second followed by senior Jillian Reichardt (Oakhurst, NJ / Ocean Township), who posted a time of 2:30.71.

Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) and Uckar went first and second respectively in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Abner won the 100 in a time of 1:05.56 and the 200 in 2:19.97. Uckar swam 1:07.90 in the 100 and 2:28.03 in the 200 backstroke.

Flynn added the final MSU first place as she took the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:06.78.

Freshman Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) claimed the two long-distance freestyle events for the men. Smith swam 10:37.20 in 1000 freestyle and then posted a time of 5:00.97 in the 500 free. Senior Matt Hyde (Clifton, NJ . Clifton) was second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:51.61.

Smith then helped the 400 freestyle relay team to victory as he combined with Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown), Lumkong and Blaise Lacca (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) for a time of 3:22.47.

Chambrovich collected a win of his won in the 200 backstroke (2:06.62). Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) rounded out the day for the Red Hawks as he took top honors in the 100 butterfly (56.18).

The Red Hawks will now rest up and prepare for the 2010 Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships which will be held February 19-21 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
