Atlanta, GA (3/14/10) – Sophomore lefthander Sean Hille (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Metuchen)) pitched seven solid innings while shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) belted a home run and drove in five as Montclair State knocked off Oglethorpe University 10-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Senior rightfielder Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) had three hits as the Red Hawks improved to 3-2 on the season, 1-1 on their spring break trip.
Montclair jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as MSU
loaded the bases with no one out. Bionde brought home the first run
with a sacrifice to score Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) and Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) singled up the middle to score Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) as the Red Hawks grabbed the early lead.
The Stormy Petrels got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but
Montclair answered with three in the fourth. Bionde delivered the first
run with a ground out and Himmelfarb added his RBI single of the game
for the second as MSU went up 4-2. Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) lofted a sacrifice fly to score the final run as MSU led by three.
MSU tacked on two runs in the fifth on a swing of the bat by Bionde,
who belted his second career home run, a two-run shot to left field.
Bionde added an RBI single the next inning as Montclair State put two
more on the board to take a 9-2 lead.
Brooks Miller (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) provided the final MSU run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Hille improved to 2-0 on the season as he allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits, striking out five and walked three.
Himmelfarb was 2-for-4 for MSU while McGraw went 2-for-3 at the plate as the Red Hawks rapped out 13 hits in the game.
The Red Hawks are off on Monday and return to action with a 3:00 pm contest at LaGrange College on Tuesday, March 16.
