Winchester, VA (3/18/10) – Sophomore catcher Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove)
belted a grand slam and drove in five runs however it was not enough as
Montclair State closed out its Spring Break trip with a 15-7 loss to
No. 8 Shenendoah University on Thursday afternoon.
Senior rightfielder Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) had two hits as the Red Hawks had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-3 on the season.
The game began well for Montclair State as Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock), Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack)
and Evangelist all drew walks to start the game. Bond then blasted his
second home run of the year (12th career) to left for the grand slam as
Montclair led 4-0 after its first at bat.
The Hornets struck back scoring twice in the second and once in the
third to pull within 4-3. MSU pushed the lead back to three run as Bond
roped an RBI double and Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) lofted a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-3.
Shenendoah took the lead with five in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth. After Sam Politan (Livingston, NJ / Livingston)
delivered an RBI with a ground out in the seventh, the Hornets tacked
on three runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings for the final
margin.
Junior righthander Jack McDonough (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) took the loss for the Red Hawks as he fell to 0-2.
The Red Hawks now return home and open up their home schedule on
Saturday, March 20. MSU hosts No. 9 ranked Rensselaer in a weekend
