Baseball Tops Muskingum, 6-2

Marietta, OH (3/26/10) - Senior lefthander John Masklee (Totowa, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) struck out 11 batters in eight innings of work as Montclair State knocked off host Muskingum College, 6-2 in the Muskingum Invite on Friday afternoon. The game was played at Marietta College.

Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit), Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) and Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) each had three hits as the Red Hawks pounded out 16 hits in improving to 6-4 on the season. Bond drove in two runs while Evangelist and Boggi had one RBI apiece.
Masklee evened his record at 1-1 this season as he allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned) in the outing.

Montclair staked Masklee to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) singled and moved to third on a pair of walks before scoring on Bond’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Muskingum would get a run back in the third, however the Red Hawks took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth. Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) singled to open the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Evangelist then lined a base hit scoring Himmelfarb for a 2-1 MSU advantage. Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) added an RBI double to cap the inning for Montclair.

The lead grew to 5-1 the following inning. Bond tripled home the first run and then scored a Boggi singled through the left side.

The final MSU run was brought in as the result of a Muskingum error. Bond and Boggi each singled with one out. A grounder moved both to second and third with Bond scoring on McGraw’s misplayed grounder.

Kevin Miller (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) pitched a scoreless ninth to cap off the win for the Red Hawks.

Montclair continues action in the Muskingum Invite on Saturday, March 27 as they take on John Carroll at Muskingum College beginning at Noon.
