Rowan Takes NJAC Baseball Twinbill; Snaps Red Hawk Win Streak

Little Falls, NJ (4/3/10) – Sophomore second baseman Brandon Winkler (Glendora, NJ / Paul VI) drove in two runs to highlight a three-run eight in the opener for Rowan while Matt Citro (Bloomsbury, NJ / Phillipsburg) and Matt Johanson (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) each belted home runs in the nightcap as the Profs swept a doubleheader from Montclair State at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Junior righthander Jeff White (Stratford, NJ / Sterling) pitched eight solid innings in the second game as Rowan extended their winning streak to four improving to 12-6 overall, 4-0 in the NJAC.

Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) and Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) had three hits apiece in the twinbill for Montclair State, which had its four-game win streak snapped. MSU fell to 9-6 overall, 2-2 in the NJAC.

Rowan trailed 6-4 heading into the top of the eighth in the opener when it put together its winning rally. Jordan Marsch (Brick, NJ / Brick) led off with a single and Eric Newell (Haddon Heights, NJ / Haddon Heights) bunted his way on with a hit. Pinch hitter Mike Scott (Layfayette, NJ / High Point) reached on a fielder’s choice as the Profs loaded the bases with no one out.

Montclair would get the first out as they forced out Marsch at the plate, however Winkler lifted an 0-2 pitch to right field scoring Newell and Scott as Rowan tied the game at 7-6. Marc Magliaro (Monroe, NJ / Monroe) then lofted a sacrifice fly as the Profs went up 8-6.

Montclair would threaten in the ninth. Himmelfarb doubled with one out and scored as Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) singled to right. Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) would follow with a base hit to put runners on first and second. But Ryan Peterson (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) would retire the next two hitters to earn his first save of the year.

The rally made a winner out of Steven Melchiorre (Atco, NJ / Hammonton) (1-0), who pitched three innings of relief allowing an unearned run and two hits. He struck out two. Lefthander John Masklee (Totowa, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) took the loss for MSU falling to 1-2.

Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Montclair while Himmelfarb went 2-for-5. Bond and Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) had a hit and run batted in for the Red Hawks.

The second game featured led scoring, especially early on. Rowan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Scott Weaver (Ledgewood, NJ / Roxbury) walked with two outs and scored as Nick Turano (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) doubled to right center.

Montclair State would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Himmelfarb, however the Profs came right back in the top of the sixth to take the lead on Johanson’s second homer of the year, a solo shot.

Rowan added another run in the eighth inning as Newell lofted a sacrifice fly and pushed the advantage to 6-1 in the ninth scoring three times. Citro belted his second home run of the year for the first run and Turano laced an RBI triple for a 5-1 lead. Marsch added an RBI double as Rowan led by five.

The Red Hawks would get two back in the bottom of the ninth. Ivan Rodriguez (Newark, NJ / East Side) singled in a run with a base hit and Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) plated the second on a ground out.  That would be as close as MSU would get as John O’Hara (Clayton, NJ / Gloucester Catholic) nailed down the final out to give the Profs the sweep.

White picked up the win to improve to 2-1.He went eight-plus innings allowing two runs and six hits, striking out four and walking three. Dan Nodarse (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) took the loss (1-1).

Marsch finished 4-for-5 while Turano was 3-for-5 at the plate. Citro added two hits for Rowan, which collected 12 in the game. Boggi had two hits for MSU.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 6 as the Red Hawks travel to Willimantic, CT to face Eastern Connecticut State at 4:00 pm.
