- Junior Alison Jaeger (Hampton, NJ / North Hunterdon) scored eight
times, including five during a key first-half run as third-ranked The
College of New Jersey snapped Montclair State’s seven-game winning
streak with a 14-8 victory over the Red Hawks in a New Jersey Athletic
Conference women’s lacrosse matchup at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.
Senior attack Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) collected a goal
and three assists as the Lions improved to 12-1 overall, 3-1 in the
NJAC with the victory.
Sophomore midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) had three goals for the Red Hawks, who lost for the first time since March 10. MSU is now 8-4 overall, 3-1 in the NJAC.
Jaeger gave TCNJ an early 1-0 lead as she scored off a free-position
attempt 1:05 into the contest. Montclair State would answer back with
two goals in a span of 28 seconds. Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East)
converted a free-position opportunity at 27:59 and Delfini tallied
unassisted as Montclair led 2-1 with 2:29 gone by in the contest.
But the Lions would score nine of the game’s next 12 goals to take
control of the contest. Jaeger finished off a Seldeen pass to tie the
game at 22-2 and Robin Deehan (Morris Plains, NJ / Academy of St.
Elizabeth) put the Lions in front as she scored with 23:53 left.
MacPhee re-tied the game with just over 20 minutes remaining however
Jaeger scored twice in a 67-second span to give TCNJ the lead for good.
Jessica Curran (Yorktown Heights, NY / Lakeland)
got the Red Hawks back within a goal on her unassisted marker with
15:16 to play, but the Lions countered with three straight to take and
8-4 advantage. Deehan, Sara Keating (Upper Montclair, NJ / Montclair)
and Jaeger each scored during the spurt. MSU’s Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) scored
with 8:04 left to cut the deficit to three however Jaeger registered
her sixth and Leigh Mitchell (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape) connected with
4:05 to go as the Lions led 10-6 at the break.
Montclair
State would get back to 11-8 in the second half on Delfini’s third goal
with 21:18 to play before TCNJ closed out the game with three straight
goals, including Jaeger’s last score with 51 seconds left for the final
margin.
Junior Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD / C. Milton Wright) made five saves for
TCNJ, which outshot the Red Hawks 29-13 in the game. Jaeger added three
draws and six ground balls while Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ /
Camden Catholic) had a team-best six draws as the Lions doubled-up
Montclair in that category, 16-8.
Freshman goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped 10 shots for Montclair State. MacPhee had three ground balls and two caused turnovers while Curran, Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) and Jamie Hudacko (Montville, NJ / Montville) had two draws each.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 22 as the Red
Hawks host Mt. St. Mary in a Skyline Conference contest at 7:00 pm. The
Lions return home on Friday, April 23 as they take on fourth-ranked
Franklin & Marshall College in a 6:00 pm start.
