Montclair State Students Raise Money for Good Causes

Four Montclair State University students are contributing their time and effort to raise money for good causes.

Two graduating seniors, Rob Bonora and Anthony Greco, decided that before embarking on their professional careers, they would spend some time contributing to society by walking coast-to-coast for a charity.

Their plan is to walk from San Diego, California to their hometown of Nutley, New Jersey for Gail’s Angels, a nonprofit organization that helps families with mothers who have breast cancer, as well as special needs children. With the cooperation of Gail’s Angels, the two men will also make a private donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Bonora and Greco will begin their walk on June 1 and are scheduled to return home by the end of September. They created a blogging Web site, www.coasttocoastforacure.com, which will update their followers and sponsors as they make their trek across the country.

Two other Montclair State students, Bethel Tesfaye, a junior, and Krystal Arango, a graduating senior, hosted a fund raiser on April 22 to benefit the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Members of the Montclair community, as well as the University community participated in the event that was held at Montclair State’s Women’s Center.

Tesfaye and Arango's goal was to raise between $300 and $400 to help pay for one woman to have an operation to correct her obstetric fistula, but during the course of the evening, they ended up raised $1,118 for the hospital. A fellow student was so moved by their fund raising efforts that she decided to donate the proceeds from the V-Day performance, to be held at 8 p.m. on April 28-29 at the Life Hall 123 Dance Theater, to the same hospital.

In response to requests at this fund raising event, the Women’s Center will continue to collect donations for the Fistula Hospital until May 4, 2010 so that faculty, students, staff and the Montclair community who wish to make additional contributions may do so. To make a donation, please contact the Women's Center at  973-655-3282 or visit them in Room 421 of the Student Center.
