Volleyball Falls to Rowan in NJAC Match

Montclair, NJ (9/21/10)  - Freshman outside hitter Dakota Osekovic (Pine Beach, NJ / Toms River South) and sophomore Katie Havlicek (Midland Park, NJ / Immaculate Heart) each posted nine kills as Rowan got seven kills apiece from five different players as the Profs swept past Montclair State, 3-0 in an NJAC volleyball contest at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening. Rowan won the match by scores of 25-10, 25-19, 25-15. 

Freshman setter Kelsey Donovan (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) collected 37 assists along with three kills and seven digs as the Profs improved to 5-1 on the season, 1-1 in the NJAC.

Freshman outside hitter Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) had six kills and four digs for Montclair State (2-13, 1-1 NJAC), which had its nine-match NJAC regular winning streak snapped with the loss. MSU’s last regular-season league defeat came against Richard Stockton in October 2008. Last year, Montclair went 8-0 during the regular-season and began its conference slate this year with a four-set win over Kean last Friday evening.

The Profs led from start-to-finish in the first set scoring the first three points and taking a 7-1 lead on an ace by Casey Grasso (Wilmington, DE / Alexis I. DuPont). Oeskovic had five kills with Nikki Binetti (Brick, NJ / Brick Township) and Krissy Collins (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) each getting three as Rowan hit .323 for the set.

The second set was closer with five ties early on before Rowan took control with a 5-1 run to take a 13-9 lead. Lauren Ruffalo (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) served three points before back-to-back kills by Megan Mondelli (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) and Kirstin Sciolaro (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) gave the Profs the four-point advantage. Montclair State get to 20-16 as Topor served an ace, however consecutive kills by Binetti and Mondelli extended the lead back to 22-16. Oeskovic added two kills and Sciolaro had one on set point as Rowan led 2-0 with the 25-19 win. 

Donovan would come up big in the third set, which featured five ties and four lead changes in the first 15 points. Trailing 7-6, Binetti gave the Profs the serve with a kill allowing Donovan to step to the line. Donovan would serve eight points, including a pair of aces as Rowan led 15-7. Havlicek had five kills in the set, including the match-winner on Donovan’s 37th assist of the match. 

Bionetti finished with eight kills for Rowan, which hit .318 for the match. Mondelli and Sciolaro had seven kills each while Ruffalo posted a team-best 15 digs from her libero position. Sarah Betancourt (Harrington Park, NJ / Old Tappan) added 10 kills. 

Kristen Bronowich (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) had four kills and eight digs for Montclair State with libero Kaitlin Irwin(Cranford, NJ / Cranford) recording a match-high 18 digs. Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) had three kills, 10 assists and six digs with Bella Milstein (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) notching six assists and seven digs.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, October 23 as the Red Hawks travel to Camden to face Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 pm. Rowan is off until Friday, September 24 when they face Muhlenberg and St. Mary’s at the Best Western Westgate Invitational at York College, PA.
