Volleyball Wins Second Straight; MSU Sweeps NJCU

Montclair, NJ (10/14/10)  - Sophomore Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) registered a triple-double with 11 kills, 14 assists and 14 digs as Montclair State posted its second straight victory, sweeping past New Jersey City in three sets in an NJAC Volleyball matchup at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.

Freshman Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) added 11 kills and 15 digs as the Red Hawks downed the Gothic Knights 27-25, 25-18, 25-19 to improve to 4-21 on the season and 3-3 in the NJAC.

Junior outside hitter Tabitha Jordan (West New York, NJ / Memorial) collected a match-high 15 kills along with 14 digs for NJCU, which dropped its third straight falling to 6-13 overall, 0-5 in the conference.

Montclair State held a 7-2 lead in the opening set and led 17-14 before NJCU scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 21-20 lead on a kill by Ashley Latushko (Kearny, NJ / Kearny). Jordan’s ninth kill in the first set brought the Gothic Knights to set point at 24-22 before a bizarre turn of events kept the set going. 

Jordan sent a serve across the net which appeared headed for an ace as it deflected off an MSU player. But before the ball hit the ground libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) dug the ball out and back over the net surprising the NJCU players who began celebrating the near service ace. Startled by the return the Gothic Knights put the ball back into the net keeping Montclair State alive. The Red Hawks would take advantage scoring the next two points for a 25-24 lead. A ball-handling error knotted the set for the third time however Topor got Montclair to set point with a kill. A bad set by NJCU gave the Montclair State the set, 27-25.

The second set again saw Montclair jumped out to an 11-3 lead as Topor served three points and Irwin four. The Gothic Knights would trim the deficit to 18-15 as Brittany Erezuma (Kearny, NJ / Kearny) had a kill and Marissa Scarpa (Kearny, NJ / Kearny) served an ace. An attack error by the Red Hawks later made the score 21-8 before MSU ran off the final four points on a kill by Topor and ace by Bella Milstein (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) sandwiched around a pair of NJCU attack errors.

Batiste had six kills in the third set as Montclair would recover from an early 3-0 hole. Tied at 13-13, the Red Hawks reeled off seven of the next eight points, which included four attack errors by NJCU for a 20-14 lead. Following a time out, Batiste, Irwin and Ratta each had a kill to make the score 23-17. Back-to-back kills by Jordan and Erezuma got NJCU within 23-19, but the Gothic Knights committed a service error to give MSU match point, which the Red Hawks converted a Toi McRae (Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) collected a kill to give Montclair State the 3-0 victory.

Milstein had 20 assists and 10 digs while Irwin, the NJAC leader in digs posted 23 along with two assists. Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) had seven kills, eight digs and three block assists for MSU, which hit .204 for the match. 

Latushko and Erezuma had seven kills apiece for NJCU which got 32 assists and five digs from Alex Johanesen (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan). Libero Amanda Dopico (West New York, NJ / Memorial) led all players with 24 digs while Scarpa added 12 digs. NJCU hit .051 for the match committing 26 errors in 156 attempts (34 kills).

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 16 as the Red Hawks travel to Muhlenberg College for a tri-match with Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins beginning at 2:00 pm. New Jersey City goes right back to work on Friday, October 15 as the Gothic Knights head across the Hudson River to New York City to face Hunter College at 7:00 pm.
