Women's Soccer Edged by Centenary in Double-Overtime, 1-0

Box Score

Montclair, NJ (10/17/10) – Junior forward Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, NJ / Holy Family Academy) headed in a corner kick with 4:47 to play in the second overtime as Centenary College edged Montclair State, 1-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, NJ / Hunterdon Central) made four saves for her eighth shutout of the season as the Cyclones recorded their third straight victory improving to 9-7 on the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) had four saves for Montclair State, which dropped its second straight. The Red Hawks are now 5-7-3 following the defeat.

After 105 minutes in which each team had its scoring opportunities, Centenary was able to get the lone ball into the back of the net as it took advantage of its lone corner kick in the game. Tatiana Kingston (Mountainside, NJ / Gov. Livingston) served a well-placed ball from the right side across the goal to the left post. Veverka came streaking in and headed the ball just ahead of Zayac’s punch-out for the game-winner. It was Veverka’s ninth tally of the year.

Up to that point, the game was full of chances. Montclair State had the early one as Denti stopped Rachel Senyszyn(Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) at the 13:06 mark and the Red Hawks got an unlucky bounce as Jenna Carroll’s (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) kick hit the crossbar in the 22nd minute.

Denti then came up with a save against Amanda Pero (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) at 36:18, with a sliding stop. The rebound bounced out, but Pero’s second attempt went wide as the game was scoreless at the half.

In the second half, Denti denied another Senyszyn shot at 51:22. Montclair got another bad break as Katie Minervini’s (Ocenaport, NJ / Shore Regional) shot off a corner kick clanked off the post.

After being out shot in regulation, 12-4, Centenary began to turn the tables with all four shots in the first overtime. Jazmine Farrell (Newton, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) was stuffed by Zayac 1:06 into the period at the top of box. Kingston would get a free kick off the play, but her attempt sailed wide. Three minutes later, Farrell against made a dangerous move in the box and got off a shot that Zayac saved initially. The ball bounced out in front, but was kicked away by MSU’s Katie Hazzard (Clementon, NJ / Highland Regional) keeping the game scoreless.

Denti made her last save 2:04 into the second OT as she snared a shot by Jennifer Rosas (Galloway, NJ / Absegami).

Montclair finished with a 13-10 edge in shots.

Both teams return to action with non-conference contests. Montclair State heads to Poughkeepsie, NY on Wednesday, October 20 to face Vassar at 4:00 pm. Centenary is home to Keystone College at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, October 19.
