Both teams advanced to the second round with very different victories. Montclair edged Hampden-Sydney in the closest game in the first round as the Red Hawks held off the Tigers, 16-14. Cornerback Andrey Green (East Orange, NJ / East Orange) batted down a two-point conversion pass with 5:14 left to help MSU maintain its two-point advantage. Gary Knoeppel (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) then came up with a huge interception on Hampden-Sydney's next possession allowing Montclair to run out the remainder of the clock for the win. The appearance in the NCAA Division III Playoffs will be Montclair’s 10th overall and
second straight marking the first time MSU has made back-to-back
appearances since a run of three straight playoffs from 1999-2001. Last
season the Red Hawks knocked off Maine Maritime at home, 38-22 in the
opening round before falling to eventual national-runner-up Mount Union
the following week. Overall, Montclair is 9-9 in its NCAA Division III
Playoff history and 10-9 in total NCAA trips which includes the
aforementioned Knute Rockne Bowl.
