Montclair, NJ (12/13/10) - Sophomore swimmer Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) and junior basketball guard Jaime Ericson (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) were named MSU Athletes of the Week for December 13.
Ericson is named for the second time this season after earning NJAC Player of the Week honors. Ericson averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while shooting .519 from her guard position in a 1-1 week of non-conference play for the Red Hawks. She opened the week with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while adding eight rebounds, three assists, and one steal in a 60-58 defeat to Baruch. Three days later, she recorded a double-double which included 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 55-51 victory over Susquehanna. Ericson, who connected on the clinching free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win over Susquehanna, currently ranks third in the NJAC in three-point field goal percentage (.452).
Smith helped the Red Hawks split a pair of meets last week as he recorded two individual first-place finishes and three individual second-place showings while also helping one relay squad to a win. Smith finished second in the 100 freestyle (49.93) and 500 freestyle (4:57.16) in a road loss at Division I Seton Hall University. He then won two events and was second in another in addition to helping the 400 freestyle relay team to a meet-clinching win as Montclair edged Ramapo for its first NJAC win, 132-130. Smith won the 200 freestyle (1:47.24) and 500 free (5:02.84) while finishing second in the 1000 free (10:53.41). He then swam the leadoff leg in the 400 free relay team that won the event with a time of 3:18.10.
