Scranton, PA (1/2/11) – Senior guard Rodney Freeney (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) scored 20 points while senior forward Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton Central) added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench as Montclair State bounced back from its first loss in over a month with an 87-52 victory over Cazenovia in the PNC Bank Classic at University of Scranton on Monday evening.
Sohpomore guard A.J. Larkin (Passaic, NJ / St. Mary's) collected 12 points and six assists earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team as the Red Hawks improved to 11-2 on the season.
Montclair trailed just once in the contest as it took the lead for good with 13:41 to go in the first half as Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) and Larkin connected on back-to-back jumpers for a 13-11 advantage. Cazenovia would get back to 15-14 however Montclair scored 11 of the next 13 points, including a three-pointer by Larkin as the Red Hawks stretched their lead to 26-16 midway through the first half.
Cazenovia cut the lead back to eight points at 30-22 with just over eight minutes left but MSU embarked on an 18-2 run spanning the next six minutes to break the game open. Freeney began the spurt with a three pointer with Prewitt and Larkin chipping in six and five points respectively as Montclair took a 52-26 lead into the locker room.
Montclair shot 60 percent (24-of-40) from the field in the first half.
Bonard finished with eight points for MSU while Brendan Holland (Briarcliff Manor, NY / Trinity Pawling) recorded six points and six rebounds off the bench.
Montclair State is back home at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wendesday, January 5 as they host SUNY New Paltz at 5:00 pm. The game will be the last non-conference contest of the year for MSU which steps back into NJAC play on Saturday, January 8 against Kean in Union at 3:00 pm. The Red Hawks are currently 2-0 in the league this season.
