Montclair, NJ (1/24/11) - Basketball standouts Kisandra Ayanbeku (Brockton, MA / Randolph) and Andrew August(Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) were named Montclair State Athletes of the Week for January 24. It is the second honor for Ayanbeku this season while August collects his third award.
August wins the award for the third time this year after helping the Red Hawks move into second place in the NJAC North Division with a pair of wins last week. The junior averaged a double-double for the week with 26.0 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 70 percent from the field and 82.4 at the foul line. He scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds as MSU downed Rutgers-Newark, 82-72. He then added his fifth double-double of the year with 28 points and 11 boards (11-of-13 from the floor) as Montclair topped TCNJ, 74-57 to move to 15-4. He also had two assists, two steals and two blocks. In the win, August scored 17 points in the first half - six in a 17-8 run to end the first half as MSU led 34-29 at the break. After TCNJ closed within a point early in the seven, he had seven in an 11-2 run that blew the game back open for the Red Hawks.
Ayanbeku is honored for the second time this year after helping MSU to a pair of conference wins. The NJAC Player of the Week, averaged a double-double 13.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week of conference play for Montclair State. She opened the week by posting 10 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal in the Red Hawks’ 64-41 NJAC win over North Division foe Rutgers-Newark. Three days later, she notched her eighth double-double of the season with 17 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, and one assist in a 57-44 NJAC victory over rival TCNJ. Ayanbeku currently ranks second in the NJAC in free throw percentage (.800).
