This Sunday began the conclusion of another great season of Intramural Sports as we had our Men’s A, Men’s B, Coed, and Women’s Championship games. All teams fought extremely hard to get to this point and the battles didn’t stop Sunday as three of the four games were decided by 6 point or fewer.
Kicking off the night was the Men’s B Championship game between the top-seeded Lansers and red-hot Waster Management. In another physical hard-fought game Waste Management squeaked by with a 40-35 victory ending the Lansers’ rein at the top. Doing most of the scoring for Waste Management was their big three of George Bonilla, Salim Laib, and CJ Adams. The Lansers battled foul trouble the entire game and were led in scoring by Tom Benack with 7.
In the only lopsided game of the night the Lady Agents took home the Women’s Championship with stellar performances from Adrian Hunter, Devin McNamara, and Carolyn Garrone. The Commanders played the majority of the first half without standout Sheneya Murphy and struggled to deal with the Lady Agents depth the entire game. The final score was Lady Agents 69- 46.
The excitement kicked up instantly with Donovan Bembridge’s Ball ‘Til We Fall team taking on Xavier Warner’s 40/40 Club in the Coed Championship. In a back and forth game, Xavier Warner and Kevin Boehler carried the 40/40 Club to an upset over the number one seeded Ball ‘Til We Fall. Warner and Boehler put in 24 and 12 respectively, as they snuck away with a four point win, 55-51. Bembridge was the game’s leading scorer dropping 32 points.
In the prime time event of the night the Raw Dogs and Ivy League matched up with many of the same players from the Coed game squaring off again. The Raw Dogs held the lead for the entire first half and began the second half on a 6-0 run to capture an 8 point lead. From this point on it was all Ivy League. Richard Brown carried the Ivy League in the second half finishing with 20 points in a 53-47 victory in the Men’s A Championship. Eric Johnannsen and Gary Knoeppel chipped in with 10 a piece in a losing effort for the Raw Dogs.
In true dramatic fashion we saved our best game for last with our Wednesday night Greek Championship game between undefeated Tau Phi Beta and Pike. In the best game of the Intramural season and possibly ever, Tau Phi Beta and Pike slugged it out for 5 overtime periods Wednesday night! Tau Phi Beta got it done the same way they have been doing it all season, timely defense holding Pike to 29 points in regulation, but Pike was equal to the task. Pike fought hard in the overtime periods, but failed to match Tau Phi Beta in the 5th overtime, giving Tau Phi Beta the Men’s Greek Championship and an undefeated season. Leading the way for the champs was Alonzo Rael with 18 points. Steve Hanna scored 20 for Pike in the loss.
