In celebration of its new status as an “All-Steinway” school and in acknowledgment of its growing stature among the nation’s leading institutions of higher learning in the musical arts, Montclair State University’s John J. Cali School of Music recently held a special concert and reception at famed Steinway Hall in New York City.
With Montclair State University President Susan A. Cole, members of the Cali Advisory Board, and other dignitaries and guests in attendance, six top-ranked young artists from the Cali School captivated the audience with solo and chamber works by Grieg, Khachaturian, Prokofiev, Ravel, and Chopin, among others.
The featured artists were Leigh Wang, Wenwen Liu, and Vincent Ip on piano, Rafael Galván-Herrera and Julia Meynert on violin, and Ashley Grutta on clarinet, with Meynert and Ip being accompanied by Cali School professors David Witten and Mark Pakman respectively.
A landmark destination for musicians and music enthusiasts since 1925, Steinway Hall was indeed a fitting venue for a performance by faculty and students of the Cali School, which has been designated an “All-Steinway” school since it made the move to its new home in the redesigned and renovated Chapin Hall in 2009.
By all accounts, the concert at Steinway Hall was a great success and plans are already underway for another concert to be held there next year.
