Women's Lacrosse Races Past Ramapo in NJAC, Skyline Opener, 15-5

Montclair, NJ (3/19/11) – Senior Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) scored four goals while junior Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) added three as Montclair State won its third straight downing Ramapo College in the Skyline and New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) tallied two goals and two assists as the Red Hawks scored eight consecutive goals bridging the first and second halves to improve to 3-2 overall with the win. 

Junior midfielder Amanda Barretta (Roseland, NJ / West Essex) had three goals for Ramapo, which fell to 1-2 overall.

The game was the first meeting between the teams since a 17-6 win by MSU in the Skyline Championship Game last May. 

Delfini would score twice and Henderson once in the opening 10 minutes as Montclair State led 3-1. The score stood that way until 10:59 to play as Baretta scored off an assist from Jenna Pfarr (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) to cut the lead to 3-2. 

Montclair then embarked on its run beginning with an unassisted tally by Schoneveld with 9:23 left before halftime.Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury), who had two goals and two assists, connected with 6:06 to play and Kayla Henderson set up sister Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) 18 seconds later as Montclair led 6-2. Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, NJ / Mount Olive) made it three goals in a 61-second span and unassisted goals by Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic), Schoneveld and Kayla Henderson gave the Red Hawks a 10-2 lead at the break.

Beal finished off the Montclair run 2:46 into the second half with her second goal of the game. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped 13 shots for Montclair, which outshot  Ramapo 26-25 in the game. Delfini added two assists along with five draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kristin Quigley (Marlton, NJ / Lenape) added three caused turnovers while Sara Watson (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) registered seven ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Diana Silva (Howell, NJ / Howell) made nine saves for Ramapo while Michelle Gustafson (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) posted three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Barretta and Adrianna Tepedino (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township) had four ground balls apiece.

Both teams return to action with road contests. Montclair State is in Allentown, PA on Tuesday, March 23 to face Muhlenberg College at 4:00 pm. Ramapo is in Madison, NJ on Monday, March 22 to take on College of St. Elizabeth at 3:00 pm.
