Box Score

New Concord, OH (3/26/11) – A seven-run third inning proved too much for Montclair State to overcome as the Red Hawks dropped their second straight game falling to John Carroll University 12-8 in the Muskingum Invite on Saturday afternoon.

Senior centerfielder Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) belted a home run while senior shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) drove in two runs as MSU fell to 6-4 on the year.

The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Anthony Bowens (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) walked and Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) followed with a base hit. Both runners would move up on a passed ball and Bowens came home as Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) lofted a sacrifice fly.

John Carroll would tie the game in the bottom of the inning, but MSU retook the lead in the top of the third as Boggi cracked his first home run of the season, a solo shot, as Montclair State led 2-1. The lead would be short-lived as John Carroll scored seven times in the bottom of the third for an 8-2 lead.

Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ / Spotswood) had an RBI single in the fourth to cut the lead to 8-3 however John Carroll responded with a run in its half of the inning and plated two more in the fifth after MSU got a run in the top half on an error.

Trailing 11-4 in the seventh, Montclair got within striking distance. Pinch-hitter Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) singled home a run and a second scored via an error. Bionde would stroke a two-run single bringing MSU within 11-8 however that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get as John Carroll put up a run in the eighth innings for the final margin.

Junior righthander Paul Ciccazzo (Staten Island, NY / Tottenville) took the loss falling to 2-1.

Boggi, Bowens and Chesterman had two hits apiece for Montclair, which had 10 in the game.
