Little Falls, NJ (4/14/11) – Freshman third baseman Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) homered in both ends of the doubleheader while classmate Katie Muglia (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) had five hits and drove in four runs as Montclair State pushed its winning streak to 14 games with a pair of victories over Baruch College at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Hawks won the first game 6-1 before taking the second contest 10-2 to up its record to 18-4 on the season. Baruch fell to 8-12 with the losses.
Freshman righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) earned her 10th victory of the season. Hill (10-2) allowed a run and three hits, striking out nine.
Hill was give a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Amato blasted a two-out, solo shot for her sixth of the year. Montclair added three runs in the third thanks in part to a Bearcat error that allowed Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) and Stephanie Szeliga (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) to score. Alisha Cumberton (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) added an RBI single as Montclair State led 4-0.
Baruch got a run in the fifth, but the Red Hawks tacked on two runs in the sixth as Gonzalez and Muglia each had two-out, RBI singles for the final MSU runs.
Gonzalez, Muglia and Amato each had two hits as the trio combined for six of Montclair State's 10 in the game.
In the second game, the Bearcats struck first with a run in the second inning, however Montclair quickly erased that with a three-run second inning. Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) scored on an RBI double by Priscilla Camacho (Jersey City, NJ / County Prep) tying the game at 1-1. After Szeliga reached on a hit, Muglia brought both runners home with a single as MSU led 3-1.
Liz Russo (Jackson, NJ / Liberty) had an RBI double in the third to make the score 4-1, but Baruch got that back in the top of the fourth for a 4-2 MSU advantage. Amato pushed the lead to 5-2 with a run-scoring double in bottom of the inning and then belted a two-run homer the following inning as the blast along with Muglia's RBI double gave the Red Hawks an 8-2 lead.
Mozek and Camacho drove in the final two runs in the sxith inning.
Sophomore righthander Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) picked up the win, improving to 8-2 on the season. Miller allowed two runs, six hits and struck out two.
Amato and Muglia had three hits apiece for Montclair State while
Mozek, Russo and Camacho had two each in the 15-hit attack for MSU.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Friday, April 15 as they host Rutgers-Newark at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm. The twinbill was rescheduled after the original date was rained out on Tuesday, April 12.
