Farmingdale, NY (4/19/11) – Junior midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) scored five times while senior Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) and sophomore Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury)
each added four goals as Montclair State captured the Skyline
Conference regular-season championship with a 20-9 victory over
Farmingdale State on Tuesday afternoon.
Beal added two assists while freshman Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) collected
three goals and two assists as the Red Hawks (10-3) won for the 10th
time in their last 11 games while taking the league’s regular-season
crown for the fifth time in the last six years.
Montclair finished 8-0 in the conference for the second
consecutive year and extended its conference winning streak to 21 games
dating back to 2009 when it lost to Farmingdale.
MSU, which has gone 39-1 since joining the league in 2006,
will be the No. 1 seed in the Skyline Tournament which begins on
Tuesday, April 26. The Red Hawks will face either Kean University or
Mt. St. Vincent in the semifinals on Thursday, April 28 at a time to be
determined. Montclair State has won four of the five previous Skyline
Tournaments, including the last two years.
Montclair State scored the first two goals as Beal and
Delfini in the first 45 seconds of the contest. A three-goal run by the
Rams gave Farmingdale a 4-3 lead however the Red Hawks responded and
seized control with a seven-goal run to end the half.
Henderson scored back-to-back goals to give MSU the lead and Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) and
Delfini scored 24 seconds apart for a 7-4 advantage with 4:08
remaining. Beal tallied an unassisted goal and later scored 12 seconds
after Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, NJ / Mount Olive)
netted a goal as the lead grew to 10-4 with 1:29 to play. Delfini
registered the hat trick with 11 seconds on the clock as the Red Hawks
led 11-4 at the break.
Farmingdale would score the first goal of the half to make
the score 11-5 however Montclair got the next four goals to push its
lead to 15-5 with 23:50 to play. Delfini and Fallon sandwiched goals
around a pair of scores by Henderson.
Fallon finished with three goals for Montclair State while
Beal added six draws, her fourth straight game with five or more draw
controls as she set a new MSU single-season record. Beal has 66 on the
year breaking the mark of 58 set by Nicole LaRocca in 2006. Henderson
had four draws as she surpassed Jennifer Tanis for the career mark in
draw controls. Henderson has 142 overtaking the 138 Tanis recorded from
2005-08. The Red Hawks won 23 of the 31 draws contested in the match.
Goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped five shots as MSU outshot the Rams, 33-23.
Before playing in the conference tournament, Montclair State
will take on top-ranked The College of New Jersey on Friday, April 22 in
Ewing at 7:00 pm in an NJAC matchup. The Red Hawks are currently 2-0
in the NJAC.
