Women's Lacrosse Runs Past Rutgers-Camden for Third Straight Win, 18-5

Montclair, NJ (5/3/11) – Junior Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) and sophomore Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) each had four goals and two assists while senior Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) tallied four goals and one assist as Montclair State posted its third straight victory with an 18-5 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory over Rutgers-Camden at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.

Senior Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, NJ / Mount Olive) added two goals and three assists as the Red Hawks, fresh off their Skyline Conference championship, improved to 13-4 overall, 3-1 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks, who earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the Skyline title, have won seven of their last eight games.

Freshman Amber Alexander (Philadelphia, PA / Cardinal Dougherty) had three goals and Samantha Gregg (Collingswood, NJ / Collingswood) two for Rutgers-Camden, which closed out its season at 3-10 overall, 0-5 in the NJAC.

Spitzer put Montclair State on the board 25 seconds into the contest however Alexander answered for the Scarlet 
Raptors less than two minutes later. Beal and Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) scored 33 seconds apart with the latter goal coming at 27:04 as MSU went up 3-1. Gregg got a goal back for Rutgers-Camden to cut the lead to 3-2 before the Red Hawks went on a nine-goal run to pull away.

Henderson scored on a free position attempt with 22:50 left and Spitzer scored less than minute later then set up Henderson’s second goal with 20:49 to play as MSU extended the lead to 6-2. Beal and Schoneveld each collected their second and Henderson did the same with 16:53 as Montclair State took a 9-2 advantage. 

Delfini scored 20 seconds after that goal before Beal and Henderson each added their third as the Red Hawks led 12-2 with 7:51 left. Alexander stopped the run with her second goal of the game with 4:42 on the clock but Delfini collected her second with 1:41 remaining as Montclair State led 13-3 at the break.

Delfini added five ground balls, three draws and three caused turnovers for Montclair State while Schoneveld added five draws and two forced turnovers. Beal won four draws with Delfini and Henderson each getting three as MSU won 19 of the 25 draws contested. Goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped six shots for the Red Hawks. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Powell (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) had six saves for Rutgers-Camden. Gregg registered three draws while Brianna Sobolewski (Collingswood, NJ / Collingswood) forced three turnovers and had three ground balls.

Montclair State has one game remaining before entering the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Red Hawks will host Rowan University at Sprague Field on Thursday, May 5 at 7:00 pm. MSU will honor its four seniors prior to the start of that contest – Kayla Henderson, Spitzer, Sara Watson (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) and Kristin Quigley (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape).
