Montclair, NJ (9/4/11) – Last season, both
Montclair State and New York University appeared in the NCAA Division
III Tournament. On Sunday, despite being an early-season contest, the
two teams played a game reminiscent of an NCAA contest as the two teams
played to a 1-1 draw at MSU Soccer Park.
Junior forward Pablo Luciano of NYU and Montclair freshman forward Maxx Wurzburger (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) each accounted for the scoring as 110 minutes was not enough to determine a winner despite several chances for both teams.
Luciano gave the Violets (0-1-1) a lead 16:20 into the game as
Adam Fein collected the ball on the right side of the box and played a
cross to Luciano, who made a run toward the near post. Luciano flicked
the ball off the outside of his left foot, sneaking it between MSU
goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) and the post.
Less than two minutes later, the Red Hawks had a chance to tie as Sean Pauls (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) collected a pass from Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) and drove toward the net. However, NYU keeper Jonah Poster made a sliding hand-stop on Pauls to keep the Violets in front.
Montclair was finally able to break through in the 62 when
Wurzburger collected his first career goal. Off a corner kick served by
Wurzburger, NYU was unable to clear the ball which eventually found its
way onto the foot of Kevin Brown (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley). Brown slid the loose ball to Wurzburger who buried the shot inside the lower right post for the tying goal.
From that point on, the Red Hawks continued to pressure and
nearly won the game in the final minute of regulation. On a last
scramble, Zalewski was fed a ball that left him all alone on the left
side. He found his way past the charging Poster and slipped a pass to a
wide-open Pablo Zegarra (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown). But Zegarra's shot struck the post, allowing the game to escape to overtime.
In the first overtime, NYU would get the only shot of the
period while Montclair outshot the Violets 3-1 in the second OT. Neither
team would put those shots on goal.
Poster finished with four saves while Rogic had one.
Montclair State held an 18-10 advantage in shots in addition to a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, September 6 as they
close out their opening three-game homestand against John Jay College at
3:00 pm. The contest will be the first half of a men’s and women’s
doubleheader. Following the game, Montclair will head to the Pacific
Northwest for games on Friday and Saturday, September 9-10 versus
Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, respectively.
